Apple has been on a warpath towards minimalism since they removed the headphone jack for the iPhone 7. In a bid to save the planet (and burn our wallets 🔥) Apple announced that the iPhone 12 would ship WITHOUT the EarPods and charging head this year (find out what else you missed in our announcement recap here).
Speaking of the iPhone 12, you can take one home right now by signing up for our Combo Plans here. You'll save up to $239 versus recontracting with your current telco and we'll even throw in some amazing freebies like free device insurance and a yearly $200 phone upgrade voucher so you can always rock the latest 📱.
There is of course a tiny bright spot where our fruity overlords have cut the prices of these missing accessories by $10 each. The question is, do you really want to fork out another $38 for both the charging head and EarPods for something that really should have come in the box 🤷♂️?
If the answer is no my friend, I say let's GO BIG OR GO HOME. Forsake wired EarPods and embrace the tangle free future that is true wireless earbuds! There's literally hundreds of options in the market right now and thankfully most of them don't cost as much as the beastly AirPods Pro.
For the uninitiated, there is a small distinction between wireless and true wireless earbuds, with the latter being a device that has no physical wires whatsoever attached to them. Traditional wireless earbuds usually have some sort of chord connecting them for like when you're running or working out.
If you want true freedom, you're going to have to go with any of these 5 true wireless earbuds that'll be just perfect for your iPhone 12.
Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2
Sennheiser is pretty much a household name when it comes to products that boast high fidelity audio. From headsets to microphones, it was only a matter of time till they broke into the true wireless earbuds - and boy are they making a splash.
Battery life? ✅ With 7 hours battery life for the buds themselves and an additional 28 hours baked into the charging case. Noise Cancellation? ✅ I've tried these and the AirPods Pro before and it's honestly hard to tell the difference. They're also hella stylish with those metallic touch-sensitive housings that boast IPX4-rated water resistance so you can take these with you on a run.
The only gripe I have is the high price point that clocks in at around $369.85 (the same price as the AirPods Pro) on Amazon Singapore. But, if you're looking to pick up something more affordable, why not try...
Funny name aside, these earbuds are big on both quality and value. If you thought the Sennheiser Momentum had an impressive battery life, wait till you get a load of the whopping 80 hour playtime you get the Tevi. It also kicks the waterproofing to IPX7 so you can go full emo and listen to Black Parade in the pouring rain (or in the shower) without damaging your new earbuds.
In terms of audio quality, TechRadar reports that the Tevi provides a "neutral audiophile-like sound" which should satisfy the everyday user jamming out to while on the way to work. All these amazing features and functions and the Lypertek Tevi only costs $78.62 on Amazon Singapore.
Mobvoi TicPods 2 Pro
While they might look similar to the AirPods (2019), the TicPods 2 are far from mere copycats. They have a full suite of cool features like automatic ear detection and dynamic motion controls. Users can slide up and down the stem of the buds to control volume and double tap either side to control their playlist and answer calls.
Joining the ranks of Siri, Alexa and Google, users can use the wake word "Hey Tico" (not the best choice imo) to connect directly with their phone's smart assistant even while in handsfree mode.
Battery wise, they don't last very long with the buds running for about 4 hours before needing a charge. Thankfully, the quick charge function let's you get about an hour of listening time in after popping the buds back into the case for just 5 mins.
If you're interested, you can pick these up for just $139.99 on Amazon Singapore.
Beats PowerBeats Pro
I'm not much of a work out enthusiast (cardio is the bane of my existence) but when it comes to form fitting workout buds, the PowerBeats Pro pretty much reigns supreme.
The fitting somehow is just perfect, fitting snugly in your ear even for those drawn out workouts. These things also seem to like never fall out. EVER. I mean just look at the video above for reference. These buds stay in through every fall, tumble and flip you can imagine. It's strange then that it's water resistance (or should I say sweat resistance) is only rated at IPX4 which covers a couple splashes here and there but not the full on thunderstorm like Lypertek Tevi's do.
Apple AirPods Pro
The biggest selling point here apart from the brand has got to be the Transparency mode which allows you to jam out to your favourite tunes while keeping a tab on your surroundings. No competitors have come close to this unique feature as of yet and Apple just keeps layering new innovative updates.
As of the iOS 14 update, the AirPods Pro also support Dolby Atmos spatial audio, bringing immersive 3D sound to your true wireless earbuds. It also tracks the motion of your head so the audio will always radiate from the original source. There's also this audio switching feature that allows for your AirPods to switch between your MacBook and phone.
You can pick up the AirPods Pro for $379 from the one and only Apple Store.
The Buds for You
Whichever true wireless earbuds you go for, you can be sure you're taking a step into the future and it's wireless baby. There's already rumors swirling that Apple will ditch the charging port completely next year in favor of pure wireless charging.
So unplug and take the plunge my friends, your ears will thank you for it 😉
